I would say it's nearly a requirement for a non-Zi Ri mage to be called a sorcerer. There are, say, a dozen sorts of things one ought to be able to do, including that; and doing half of them approximately qualifies you for the honorific. Not that the rules are solid, or even written down anywhere.

As you have noted yourself, the defining feature of a sorcerer or a wizard is that people call them that with a straight face.
