Amazing Summer Days [9 Lage 4261]

It's finished! At last! At a far too long last!

Behold The Quill Pen Of The Hairy-Nosed Wombat Headed Demonurge of Plong

That doesn't look right, does it... no, it's "Demiurge", not "Demonurge". Whatever!

And of course there's no such place as Plong, as far as I know.

It did take far too long. It could be done in two weeks ... a stronger enchanter could do it in one, I think ... and, given that I can expect a week's work to fail about half the time, it should take about four. It took seven. Mostly bad luck of course. Well, four weeks of bad luck and one week tossed away for boyfriendly matters. Not very impressive, but, well, a Zi Ri really ought to trade on zir natural advantages, shouldn't zie?

Which, in this case, means (1) time, (2) rich relatives, and (3) Sustenoc.

Anyways, the Quill Pen of the Hairy-Nosed Wombat Headed Demonurge of Plong is a quill pen which, by a straightforward Mutoc Sustenoc Illusidor trickery, lets one write -- without using ink -- in whatever colors one wishes.

As long as the substance being written on has only a modest magic resistance, or doesn't object to being written on. This journal book, for example, is sentient enough to know that it should let me write on it.

Ilottat, however, is not sentient enough to know that he should let me write on him.

And it's not as if I was doing anything that would get him in trouble or anything, either. I was just trying to write "Property of Sythyry" on a part of him which, well, nobody else is currently particularly interested in. I suppose technically it's either his or Ysgwyd's.

And it's not like it's a very strong spell that can't be dispelled. It's power 5. I could spont a Healoc Illusidor spell to knock it over.

(Actually, that's a general flaw of this pen, which I should be careful of. While the color change is permanent, it is very easy to break, if one should be so inclined. Things that I want to stay written should be done in real ink... Though a quick experiment reveals that this journal resists erasure of the pen's writing with its full force, which is a lot.)

But that's not the amazing thing. The amazing thing is that Ilottat and I went out on a date.

Now, one might expect that a pair of lovers -- even adulterous lovers, given that the nominally-offended spouse is fully aware of the situation -- would go out on dates now and then, and nobody would be wholly amazed. But the news of this date boggled (1) Anoof, (2) Thery, and (3) me.

Ilottat didn't even catch fire and burn to ashes in the middle of Muffantando's. He was quite nervous, of course. But he did hold my hand in the performance of Druzatta's Spare Bird.

Maybe sometime we'll get to go on a date with me looking like myself at all.

"Maybe sometime we'll get to go on a date with me looking like myself at all."

That's so sad. I hope Ilottat eventually comes to terms with your relationship and treats you better.

That's a mighty cool pen you've got there. :)

Actually, I am enjoying trotting around as an Orren girl. It has many perplexing advantages! I now have two quite nice Orren girl outfits. And, most amusingly, I can actually order a full-sized dinner, with all the courses, and eat it, just like a reasonable person.

If you are happy with that form, then I am glad for you.

I will note that it seems perfectly reasonable for a small person to eat small portions, such that you do not need to change your size to eat a "reasonable portion". But that may simply be my monstrous misunderstanding of things.

Well, it's nice to be able to get through all the courses at a fancy dinner that I have paid for, and not look at the fourth of seven and groan, "Do I have to taste that?" Not very many restaurants will do Zi Ri sized portions, and none of them charge proportionally for how much I do eat.

That makes most perfect sense. It would be most reasonable for restaurants to do Zi Ri sized portions. And since not, it is good to be Orren for a while.

This time, I agree with Ilottat

I am proud to acknowledge my lovers, and I would not want any of them writing "property of $name" on any part of my anatomy.

I am of similar sentiment. But I also would prefer that if I have anyone else's name on my anatomy, that it be on a garment, not my skin in a permanent fashion.

I agree; I am a partner, not property -- and I'd like my lover(s) to consider themselves similarly.

Yes, you must be careful about breathing fire while in Orren girl form! };)

I thought real things had a very low magic resistance naturally... couldn't you spont a healoc illusidor to erase something written in actual ink?

Questions: how likely would it be for you, a Zi Ri, to magic yourself up as some sort of semi-permanet Orren girl, of made up background, who then marries Ilottat as a second wife? Would this constitute some sort of crime? Is it simply impossible due to how difficult it is to hide disguise magic?

From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
It's not a good idea for two reasons. (1) Long-term shapeshifting magic isn't entirely healthy. (2) Ilottat won't touch me when I'm in Orren shape, or mostly not.

And people who live as different species are not regarded very well at all.

In this size, you're now capable of consuming, rather than sitting on, a slice of pizza. How about suggesting the idea to Floosh as a Recipe From Beyond Time and Space?

From: [identity profile] chipuni.livejournal.com
I'm sure that Flooosh would be glad to bake a flatbread with a savory red sauce (I wonder whether the World Tree has a tomato-analogue?) and cheese, and maybe a dash of offirrah (yum!).

[Bard: It's a bit more complicated than that, of course. There's one thing I'd translate as a raw tomato, and several different sauces -- mostly fruit+vegetable purees -- that I'd translate as tomato sauces. -bb]

If living in Seattle has taught me anything, it's that you hardly need the normal ingredients to make a pizza. Just some cheese, any kind of cheese, a spicy sauce, and bread. And, ideally, other things to sprinkle on top.

If you screw up and it tastes horrible, that means it's gormet.

I'm curious, what happens if you eat a really big meal and then happen to drop Cloak of Another God?

Does the ingested food shrink to Zi-Ri size or do we end up with a /very/ round little dragon?

Date: 2005-04-06 02:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
It shrinks! It's a good spell, and generally does the right thing.

But what would happen if a Herethroy had eaten meat?

From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
Usually it's OK. One of the case studies last term was about a Herethroy who liked being a Sleeth, and hunting. Usually she did fine turning back. Once in a while she would get sick, especially right after a meal, or after eating finely-aged carrior.

A case study on highly unusual Herethroy?

No, on Cloak of Another God. I had a lot of a class about that spell, last term.

A shame, I'm sure it would make a particularly good thesis.

That's a lovely little project there. Perfectly suited to an enchanting student's work. But, don't worry about how long it took. If you end up with an Enchanting profession, you'll find things aren't as easy as they are 'supposed to be'. There are all kinds of factors that are 'guessed' and each can contribute to delays if you're off a little. So, don't be too distressed. :) Just relax and enjoy it. At least you won't be asked to go to the verticals and slay monsters! :)

No need to make justification, I understand completely. Also, being a terrible intelligence from beyond the farthest gulfs of non-Euclidean space, a certain level of acerbical crotchetiness is to be expected in my commentary.

Angry Fruit Salad sure did make me laugh, though.
