L'Apres-Sexe I [13 Thory 4261]

Anoof:"Well, you certainly look smug, Sythyry."

Me:"Oh, do I? That's probably a mistake."

Anoof:"I take it you had a good evening with Ilottat, then?"

Me:"Your hat suggestion worked wonders!"

Anoof:"And your frequent complaint of the last while? Are you still loverless and solitary and whiny?"

Me:"I really shouldn't answer that question, for I have been impressed with the considerable need for privacy, even secrecy. Was I that bad before?"

Anoof:"You will have to work harder on secrecy!"

Me:"I didn't tell you anything!"

Anoof:"You told me a great deal! The very word "before" tells many a story, just by itself."

Me:"Eep!"

Anoof:"Do not worry! I am the go-between."

Me:"Well, then, you have gone between very cogently and mightily! I will no longer complain about excessive virginity."

Anoof:"Tell me more!"

So I told him what I have already told you. He was impressed with Ilottat's choice of venue, though he did point out that Darraden's was probably getting pre-dawn spellcasts (using cley which would go to waste otherwise), not retail prices. Still, it must have cost some hundreds of lozens.

He was less impressed with Ilottat sending me home naked afterwards.

Me:"Oh, it's all right. He just didn't think quite that far ahead."

Anoof:"Or that far behind. Anyone paying enough attention to see who leaves the room, might be paying enough attention to see who goes into the room."

Me:"Do you think he's being watched?"

Anoof:"By Darraden's waitstaff and such, yes, at the very least. I doubt they'd do anything; I know for a fact they don't care who does what, and that they break seven bones of any staff who tries blackmail. More famous people than that have assignations there!"

Me:"It seemed well set up for assignations. Speaking as an assignatee."

Anoof:"Oh, it's usually for political or business assignations."

Me:"That end up in bed?"

Anoof:"The bed's usually in a closet on the third floor."

Me:"How do you know that?"

Anoof:"My sister's mate's cousin works there."

Me:"And of course you attend to everything your sister's mate's cousin says."

Anoof:"In this case I do! Havune vetoed her, or she might be a fiancee of mine."

Me:"I suppose I would pay attention in that case."

And so forth.

Er... Anoof went between Ilottat and Sythyry? Well, that's certainly an interesting arrangement given that Anoof was not there at... oh, wait. Right. :)

This, for what ever reason, reminded me of a question I have about Cani and their relationships. I'd imagine it'd be very difficult to find two Cani who weren't related in one fashion or another. Us monsters tend to not like the idea of mateships within our own family now er days, though with the nobles that rule was streached quite a bit. Where, if any there is any at all, is the line drawn for Cani in who can be an acceptable to be married to and who can't be, in terms of relation?

Well, Cani have three degrees of marriage. Each Cani has a husband/wife of the opposite sex, considered their primary partner, and one or two mates of the opposite sex, who are the other acceptable parents of their children, and a brother-brother/sister-sister, considered to be the closest spouse of the same sex (who may or may not be a lover), and another 0-15 spouses who they are married to but not as closely as husband/wife, mate, or b-b/s-s. I think. Some Cani may do it differently.

I don't know how close relatives are allowed to marry. Littermates maybe don't get married (even littermates with different parents or the same sex)? -- except maybe they do, just not in degrees that can be parents? Or if there's some reason to do it? I don't know. I think that Cani clans get mixed in there somewhere -- littermates who are also of the same clan don't marry?

I should have it figured out within some 729 years though.

I expect that the Darraden's staff is relativley trustworthy as long as the potentially-damaging secrets of the upper-class go; I mean, if it got around that Darraden's waitstaff were easily convinced to spread whatever dirt they had, I'm guessing that Darraden's would cease to be a popular upper-class establishment fairly quickly.

That being said, if Ilottat plans to get into the spy trade, he probably should start paying attention to details like that one. :)

Maybe that's the true purpose of this excercise -- his mother told him to go out and gather intimate data on interspecies relationships, but if she heard anything about him sleeping with anyone not of his species, she'd disown him as being unworthy in spycraft.

Well, maybe "spy" means something different there. A diplomat/spy is a diplomat who speaks the native language and learns native customs and generally tries to understand native culture and represent it to the home government. The other kind of diplomat mostly goes to places to negotiate treaties and then leaves once they're negotiated, and like that. The spy/diplomat will help the negotiating one by explaining what's important to the other side, and such as that.

Ah. We'd call that person an ambassador, I think, or just a diplomat.

Among monsters, a "spy" is someone who is secretly working for a foreign government, getting information that the government of the place zie lives doesn't want revealed. More loosely, to spy on someone is to find out things without them knowing you're finding out.

Well, "diplomat and spy" is the sort of diplomat he will be. I suppose they're happy to get any useful information, revealable or not. Or maybe I'm wrong.

Which is more likely to exist: an unknown, nondescript orren who happens to look just like sythyry when she cloaks, or sythyry happening to look like an unknown, nondescript orren when zie cloaks?
