The Vind did I seek to comfort when he came back to Strayway, though not so well did I do so.  The stories I plead with you to tell me today are these -- of a time when a friend did some terribly foolish thing, that caused them much sorrow, and so you comforted them, with or without success.

Most recently, a friend of mine made a silly social blunder (insulting
someone without meaning to) and kept taking it very hard. So, to
cheer her up, I kept describing in vivid and improbable detail the
awesome and incomprehensible (by mere mortals) extent of her guilt and
the myriad absurd ways in which she deserved to be executed. She
started laughing and quit seeming unhappy.

Before Vae tries this with Vind we should make sure she understands sarcasm and that you were being sarcastic when you said all that!

Most of the time when I try to comfort people it turns out pretty badly. I'm trying to think of specifics but it isn't working.

Ah, right. A friend broke up with someone and I tried to comfort them by explaining why the other person wasn't actually a horrible evil monster that the friend should have known was scum from the first instant they saw them. Inevitably this ended up with me taking the other person's side against them in an argument.

When he is shamed, I like to remind my mate of all the things he does which are good. That and some sweets and a massage sometimes help him forget feeling so much guilt.
