“Lingna-no Gibobi ranks great among the criminals of Hanija. He is the only one who has been punished more than once for doorwaying. Most people would stop with once, but not he! The first time, when he was an officer in the city guard, he allowed hugeng to enter Hanija by the sally-gate, where they killed his rival. His alibi was superb, however, and he was simply killed twice and then imprisoned for a year. The second time, when he was a private bodyguard of Enowong the Bosafdade of Magnificent, he allowed a mewellicap to enter the city by the sally-gate, whereupon it caroused most regrettably with the Khtsoyis who dwell by Slythercunte Lane until it was slain by the brave city guard. As nobody had been killed or even injured, Lingna-no was simply executed twice and imprisoned for a year. The third time, the doorwaying was stopped before anything occurred: the magistrate happened to observe Lingna-no creeping stealthily towards the sally-gate at a dismal and deceptive hour of the night. He was executed once and imprisoned for a year as a precaution. And the fourth time, the sally-gate was opened, and the hugeng entered Hanija once more, slaying thirty-eight people. Lingna-no’s crushed body was found at the sally-gate; he was their first victim. Alas, he could not be executed again, being already dead; but his body was impaled, and cast into prison for seven years. Thus, always, with doorwayers.” — Une-Ke’s Book of Bedtime Stories of Revenge and Marvelment

And obviously Lingna-no let the last hugeng in because his body was there! No other reason is possible for its presence, nor need even be considered, in light of his history. *nods*

... that gets to you, but not the specious arrest and summary execution from the time before "as a precaution?". Mr. Gibobi I think had significant problems before that last cause. :D

Suspicious, not Specious. Stupid Spellcheck.

They were really really tolerant to let him get to 2! Most cities would've at least exiled him after the first offense, if not left him dead. I bet one of the terms of his release was that he stay away from gates except with an escort. I sure wouldn't want him near one!

It looks like they weren't sure he *did* the first one, but they executed and imprisoned him anyway because it was so awful. I wonder how many other people also got executed and imprisoned for that incident? Doorwaying monsters for the purpose of killing someone is like the second worst possible kind.

...

So what is the worst reason?

Yeah, basically. Doorwaying monsters for the purpose of killing everyone. n.n

[Cool!]

[Unusually cool, in fact. The names were all randomly generated, except that prostitute district. I spent a while and a half fussing with Hanija's phonetic system and generator. Seems to have worked.]

You know... a different lesson is to be learned here, of the mystic link between Lingna-No and the Hugeng, and the special relationship that they had, and the tragic end of the reluctant prophet. Well... might be a prophet. One never can tell with Prophets.

I guess it's always convenient to have a designated doorwayer, so that you know who to execute when random monsters get into the city.

The Usual Suspects is a Long Time Honored Tradition in Law Enforcement! Almost as long standing as Bad Irish Accents!

I see your justice system is just as crapsack as ours.
