No Party For Me (or, Party For Me) [3 Consimbs 4261]

Following my ~mother~'s advice, I did not have a spell-learning party for Extra Sleep in the Morning. Instead, I had a very ordinary date with Ilottat, except that the next morning showed up a good three hours later than one might reasonably expect.

Well-rested and well-stickied is a very nice combination.

Though, at this rate, I'm gonna wind up buying cley two or three times a week, once Enchantment gets going.

Here's more or less how it works. [Yes, this is how zie wrote the table. I know it's confusing, even without the mistake zie acknowledges. -bb]

Well, usually the 6 is a really really good day.

Which is not to say that I'm going to need to track down eighteen cley on a bad day. But I might well need three or four, and not have time to meditate to get it. (I had sort of thought that Extra Sleep would help with meditating time, but Extra Sleep really only works if I have an hour or two to use it on -- it doesn't create entirely new time, it just gives a really good deal on time I already have.)

So ... yes, I have bought cley a few times already this term. I can imagine that I'll need to do it more often.

For the information of monsters and exceedingly decent people: buying cley is not a very decent activity. Indeed, selling cley is rather shameful -- it's rather like selling your sexual services for cheap. Buying cley isn't so embarrassing, but it does point out that I don't get enough. And I get a lot, by student standards; I've really been working on it.

Yes, ~mother~ did give me a budget for buying cley.

No, after the incident with buying spells -- in accordance with zir budget! -- I don't really want to take full advantage of buying cley.

So, I could cut down on the cley I use (which is possible but awkward and will render life itself meaningless and miserable, or at least, cut down on my time with my boyfriend). I could increase how much cley I get (which I am doing as quickly as anyone could -- adventuring is good for that -- but it's still slow).

I could find other ways to do these things...

  1. Find a nonmagical way to get to Ilottat's apartment without the spies thinking he's traff. Or perhaps persuade him to come get sticky in my room once in a while. Or otherwise need less magical subterfuge there.
  2. Enchant devices for grooming myself and carrying things.
  3. Hire a bodyservant to carry things. (Or one who has the right grooming spells and the skill to cast them, but that's harder)

There's really only one sensible choice in that list, isn't there?

While the bodyservant will be quite useful and reasonable, a talisman of some sort with just the right kind of enchantment won't die off and have to be re-hired in forty or fifty years. Plus, it should be usable even whilst in flight.

But that's just my word on it.

A personal bodyguard would probably have the skill to cast the right grooming spells.

I'm guessing number 2 is the practical one? Although it would take a while to get it done... 'less you bought one from Rhedwy, or something.

Well, if you're enchanting things for class already, it would make sense to enchant things that would be practical for your own use, yes.

Wouldn't Ilottat get his fur singed if he tried to join you in the fireplace?

[identity profile] terrycloth.livejournal.com 2005-12-29 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
How about cheating the gods? If you feather-cast the raven's beak for a while, maybe you could feather-cast your Ilottat-related spells, since you're usually cancelling them before their time's up anyway.

Yes. Only one sensible choice indeed. Make Illotat give you the cley for the discretions you take for his comfort, when you need it.

Floooosh!

[identity profile] perlandria.livejournal.com 2005-12-29 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What the skilfully pastrified fur slinky said! Does Illotat have 6 cley to offer you as a token of his appreciation for yoru time togeather?

[identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be about 12 cley -- transferring cley loses a lot of it -- and some of it I'd need before he can give it to me. I will ask. Dratted Flooooooooooooooooooosh.

[identity profile] perlandria.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm do you lose as much cley in VERY close contact.
Ahem.

[identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Trust the Floooooooooooooooosh to come up with the sensible alternative that wasn't in the list.

I'm having trouble figuring out which is non-sensible..
1. Have Ilottat visit, with the excuse of studying for your classes. And you visit him.
2. Enchanting class is great for little projects like these. And a grooming talisman would be easy to enchant, if it only needed to work 2 or 3 times a day.
3. This could be expensive, but you would only really need them for part of the day, yes? So maybe hire some first-year student to help? (And, for your sake, I suggest a non-Orren, so that Ilottat doesn't get jealous.)

Of course! With a petty soul gem and a thousand coins or so you can make a Ring of Levitation (1 pt/6 sec) and avoid those darn cliff racers.

Oh, wait, wrong world... But in a different game (Neverwinter Nights) I did get the ability to become a small blue dungeon lizard. Fun!

[identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
OOC - really? How did that work?

[identity profile] kris-schnee.livejournal.com 2005-12-30 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
You can play a Druid, which leads you to an advanced character class called Shifter. Shifters can turn into small flying dragon-things in various colors.

The game's based on "Dungeons & Dragons" rules, which means it's full of arbitrary race/class/level/alignment restrictions, adventures in which "Good" characters have to kill everything in sight, and items that are "+1" for no particular reason; and gives little thought to how magic affects its Generic Medieval society. I bought the game because the company is having a contest to recruit writers.

Your demands range from twelve to thirty seven. However, some of them are not randomly spaced, or can be accomplished in other ways. Adventurer spells (2) come only on every third day, and correct me if I am wrong, but can you not control when you are to be learning spells (6)? You might be able to control the 'Cley for practicalities' with limited and judicious use of a paid retainer to do such tasks for you. Furthermore, it does not seem unreasonable to me to ask Illotat for cley on particularly bad days, if that is acceptable, as you are using the cley directly for his benefit.

I look forward to reading about Sythyry's new bodyservant. };)
