Help on homework please!

It's getting late in the term, and I'd like some help with a homework assignment. No, I don't want you to do it for me: everything that one Zi Ri will do on it, I will do on it.

But I am supposed to ask an assortment of creative and clever people certain questions, and perform various analyses of the results.

How many lovers should a decent and civilized person have at any one time?

That's like asking how many meals should a decent and civilized person have on any day. There's only one answer: It depends. Some people have a large meal around noon, and a small meal in the evening. Others have many small meals.

How many lovers depends entirely on the culture and on the people involved.

In my opinion, I don't recommend having more than one lover at a time -- not for moral reasons, but for practical reasons. When I was part of a long-term threesome, I noticed that each person in it was jealous of the relationship of the other two people. A joining of families that I've known about (two couples becoming one foursome) ended with two messy divorces, a lot of yelling, and a lot of hatred. A third threesome that I've known escaped fighting only when the third in the relationship left to become part of an organic farm.

I'm not saying they can't work -- I know of a few poly households that have succeeded. But I've known more that have broken up.
