Classes, finally [2 Chirreb 4261]

Appreciation of Chairs, taught by Prof. Yrrkyrr. He didn't give me a very good grade last term. He's a bit of a Rassimel bigot -- in the sense that Rassimel get better grades than non-Rassimel for exactly the same work. (Viz. Yarwain and I worked together on everything, but Yarwain got "Finely Considered" and I got "Tolerably Considered".)

Still, he remembered me, and he would be glad to have me in his class again. And it's a late afternoon class, and he is an interesting lecturer, and I was a bit desparate for a fourth class. I'm officially not doing very well on Eitharheinen's requirements for getting my big stipend, but I think zie won't mind. In any case, I'm getting adventurer experience up to my snout and ten times deeper, which should make up for it.

Speaking of which: I bought an assortment of minor spells in a variety of arts, including some which exercise as many as they can cram into a tiny spell, which I must make sure to cast when I'm with Vae or on my way to her.

Yuck. Now I'm thinking like an adventurer.

The kind of adventurer who takes a course on Appreciation of Chairs, yet.

One must wonder if chairs will limit itself to the traditional definition of seated furniture, or allow for a more liberal expansion to include perching options in deference to the composition of its students.

Well, I hope they at least provide other perching options. There are Herethroy in the class, at least; it's not just for furred bipeds.

Thank you for answering my question about this class -- from the description above, I was wondering if it might be only you and Ilottat in the class!

Me ... Ilottat ... alone ... with lots of chairs.

Well, it was sounding good 'til the last bit.

No, those are just the people I think you might know about in the classes.

At least it would have given you a new appreciation for them!

What the hell is "Appreciation of Chairs"???

I mean... is that a real class? Or is that what you call any class that is tooooooo easy (what we would call "Underwater Basket Weaving.")

Um ... yes, it's a real class. It's an advanced Collections class devoted to furniture. It's about, oh, styles of furniture, and important crafters and artists who made furniture, and nifty stories relating to furniture, and, of course, studies of major collections of chairs. By my Famous Collections prof from a while ago.

It's not way too easy. I'm going to do fairly badly, even if I team up with someone really good, 'cause I'm not a Rassimel.

This reminded me... Speaking of grades, we have often been exposed to the grades of your classes but I don't recall ever seeing the scale actually laid out in any sort of order. I mean, it's rather obvious that finely considered is better then tolerably considered, but is finely considered better then well reasoned?

Date: 2005-06-13 04:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
Of course not -- that's like asking, "Is beer better than soup?"

(There isn't a total order, and not all grades are applicable to all classes, nor do they all mean the same for all courses. "Finely considered" means that you looked at stuff and paid a lot of attention to differences and fine points of the stuff. It's a good grade in an Appreciation kind of class, since that's what the class is about. It's a nasty insulting grade in a math class -- it says that you looked at the math but didn't do any.]

Oh, dear. You have my sympathies on the timing of the Nendrai Ethology class -- which apparently occurs right when you're still most flustered and upset! Will the professors at least be kind enough to have good brandy available for you? ;)

Date: 2005-06-13 04:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
It was my choice, actually. I guessed that I would be most likely to get useful sympathy there, since, well, it's a goodly number of my friends, and all.

If Nestrune doesn't bring princely brandy, though, I shall have him dubbed "Nestrude".

Of course, there's also extradimensional horrors like us who you can turn to. :) We're a reasonably sympathetic lot. :)

Ah, but can you send brandy?

I'm not sure you would want brandy sent by Extradimensional Horrors. Hehe.

Oh good, we shall hear of Rhedwy this term! Rhedwy is such the fun Sleeth. };)

Perhaps you should consider using your grafted spell to appear as a Rassimel for Appreciation of Chairs?

Date: 2005-06-13 06:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
Well, I'd have to use a false name and identity. And get grades under a false name and identity. And then somehow persuade those grades to get attached to the real me.

Oh, dearie. I am thinking like an adventurer again, aren't I?

*purrs approvingly*

Well, if you could find a practical reason to appear as a Rassimel - for instance, you might claim that you are exercising your Cloak of Another God - then if your Appreciation of Chairs professor's bigotry is primarily visual, that is, see someone of a Rassimel shape, treat them favorably, then there would be no need to adopt a false name and identity.
