Hunting Classes Too Late, part 2 [2 Chirreb 4261]

The rest of the day was not so easy. I had four variations on the following theme:

Me:"Hallo -- I'd like to take your class in such-and-such."

Prof:"Well, choosing day for upperclassfolk was yesterday."

Me:"Yes, but a nendrai had put a doomy spell on me, and I was busy with that."

These professors mostly had been paying attention to recent news.

Prof.:"I'm quite sorry, yet quite firm. Regardless of the fact that choosing day is generally no more than a minor formality and that you are among perhaps a sixth of the returning students who are wandering around doing just the same errand. And the fact that several seats in my class are surely reserved for newcoming students. And the fact that my course is not one for which the limit on the number of students need be very tight, and, in all but one case, is nowhere near being met. This has nothing at all to do with the fact that you are under a powerful and rather obvious spell, and of course I am not worried that you will wander into class with an equally powerful and far more dangerous spell some day, and endanger me and all my students. No. Nothing like that."

And I know for a fact that Esory got into Prof. Merethius' class, and she asked later than I did.

Cowards. Cowards, the lot of them!

Fortunately, I have a very fine boyfriend who is treating me to lunch at the Cafe du Fronde. After lunch I shall resume my quest. Perhaps I shall stay in Orren shape.

(Private to Ilottat, if you ever read this: I am very, very sorry for being such a high-maintenance umgirlfriend. I'll give you a present though, when we have a little time. I'll teach you Umtangeian.)

Eeep! I think the idea of getting a note from the Duke would be a very good idea at this point. Even if the idea /did/ come from a monster. .. Hope nobody I know finds I'm getting ideas from monsters. :( Anyway, you may either have to force the professors to let you in via a note, or else have a very light term. (Unless you want to threaten the professors, which would probably encourage them to treat you poorly, and thus makes it a very bad choice.)

A letter from the Duke more or less *is* threatening the professors, is it not?

Besides, it'd probably be less dangerous to find a spellweaver who can remove the spell or something.

We decided to wait three days and get Vae to get rid of it herself. I want her to know how much she almost killed me.

And, well, threating professors with the Duke, or Zemi, isn't a good idea. These professors are used to students who are, say, crown princes of Daukrhame or something. They're hard for students to intimidate, and liable to get revenge.

I /did/ say threatening was a bad idea. I was thinking of a note that says, more or less, 'Yes, we know Sythyry has a dangerous position outside of school. However, in the interest of preserving the city, we will make sure zie is free of dangerous spells when zie returns. Thus, professors need not worry that zir work will go to class with zir'.

Of course, dangerous means 'dangerous to the city'. As evidenced that nobody's getting too excited about the liquid-proof spell currently surrounding the Zi-Ri
