Well, it'd be my thought that her current situation is the result of guiltily repressed desires coming out anyway in an obviously self-damaging manner. The analogy to our world obviously isn't perfect, but I would hope it accomplishes what I suspect is Bard's goal -- namely, for us to consider the ramifications of social conventions before blindly integrating them into our persons.
