Moderately common in a very generous interpretation of "assassin". It is not so likely that Gloun would have Thery killed -- for one thing, that's illegal, and a countess has fewer options for escaping with her status and wealth intact than almost anyone else.

But having one's household adventurers show up to perform corporal punishments is far from unheard-of. And, depending on the details of the arrangement between Thery's family and Gloun's, is likely to be legal in some extent.

And, um, I think someone was exaggerating a bit. Such a mode of expression has been known to happen in our social circle already. Or, even, in my journal.
