sythyry: (OOC)
[personal profile] sythyry
I've got a decent playlist for Sythyry-writing.  But I'd like to expand on it a bit.

So, can you recommend music that you think would encourage me to write more Sythyry?

Tracks tend to work well if:
  • They don't have English lyrics.
  • They are fairly upbeat and energetic.
  • They suggest Sythyry (or World Tree stuff), or a mood you'd like to see more of in Sythyry, or something like that.
  • They are available as MP3s on Amazon or iTunes, or you can send them to me, or something.
I've got the LJ handle of the person who told me about a track attached to the name of the track in my playlist, so I kind of think of them as "Scorpion Frog from otter3" and so forth.

Thanks very much!

The Paprika original sound track might serve well.

Magma has an album that's all up-beat jazzy choral music in a made-up language.

I am listening to classical music performed by Joshua Bell this morning. I'll let you know if I like any of the tracks in particular for Sythyry. :)

Adiemus, if you haven't already discovered them, might be interesting: they use various musical forms from various musical traditions (a lot of Western common practice period stuff, but not just) but use melody and harmony from a more contemporary model (somewhat New Agey, but not just that - Enya, McKennitt, etc. are in the same ballpark.)

Some songs have language, but it's deliberately nonsense syllables that sound like they ought to mean something, but don't. The first CD of theirs is my favorite, but the dances CD might be a better fit for Sythyry

Have you sampled either of the last two Michael Cretu (aka CurlyMC, aka Enigma) albums? "A Posteriori" and "Seven Lives, Many Faces".

I'd like to know what music you do already listen to for Sythyry? I'm curious about the extant soundtrack of these stories.

Inner Universe keeps coming to mind, though it does have a few lyrics in English here and there.

It doesn't appear to be readily available in mp3 format (at least on Amazon), but I can send you the mp3 if you like it.

Welcome Home from the Cave Story Remix Project springs to mind. That's a youtube link, but if it suits the whole album (which has a few other nice bits to it) is available from the project page.

I highly recommend:

Anything by A. R. Rahman, but especially his later work. (Film composer from India.)
Alabina. (Singer in Arabic and French, mostly, with a Spanish Gitano band behind her.)
Azam Ali (Singer in Farsi)
Bajofondo Tango Club (Tango / Electronica)
Banco de Gaia (Electronica.)
Cheb Mami (Rai singer in Arabic, with many European influences.)
Christopher Tin (Composer)
Hossam Ramzy (North African drummer.)
Jay Chao (Chinese superstar)
Manoogh High (India, mixes multiple genres)
Niyaz (Singer in Farsi)
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Qabbali singer. Yes, you have heard him.)

Meditation from an Aliverian Refugee, by Matthew Ebel, from "Songs from the Vault 1". It's vaguely Asian in feel and puts me in mind of Hanija. :)
