sythyry: (sythyry-doomed)
[personal profile] sythyry

Mirrored from Sythyry.

Jyondre acquired Rehit himself. (Rehit, for the record, has never heard that
Eigrach has any law against locating or even scrying of one’s clients.
Bwipin, who was also collected, is quite sure there is no such law.) They
performed a detailed investigation taking most of the afternoon, which may be
summarized thus:

Rehit and/or Bwipin: “This is a matter of foreigners
against foreigners. The city’s policy is that Sythyry — and Jyondre and
Yerenthax — are honored guests, and should be treated with adequate
courtesy except when the privileges of a citizen should be emperilled.
Thus, we require of you the truth!”

Raliet: “I point out that it is a privilege of the
Jivu that I may not be interrogated in this matter, for certain technical
reasons which need not concern the off-branchers.”

Jyondre, Rehit, and Bwipin: “Ah, yes. You-jivu are
exempted.”

Phaniet: “Your somewhat rebellious (as Cani go)
teenage pack-daughter there — Azliet — what is her status in the
Jivu?”

Azliet: “I have been rejected by the Jivu. Ask me
whatever questions you wish. Somewhat surprisingly, even to myself, I am
eager to obey the civic authorities in this matter, for they are less
loathy to me than is my aunt Raliet.”

Civic Authorities: “Thank you!”

Azliet: “Under your uncompromising, diligent, and
all-perceptive interrogation, I tell you all I know!, I conceal nothing
despite my attempts! Thiane, Zascalle, and children were here one night,
some days ago, on the ninth of Lage to be precise. The children were very
strange, even for Rassimel. The young one looked dazed or drunk or
something, and the older one … made the fur on my tail stand up somehow.
They departed in the morning, headed for the sky-docks. They left a large
gift of money to us, which the adults did not distribute equitably. Oh,
and the children wrote some letters, which we dribbled out over the week.
We’ve got three letters left, if you want to save us the bother of sending
them.”

Mundane Investigators: “The ninth of Lage? It is
now the seventeenth of Lage! Nearly a week later!”

Azliet: “You are indeed fucked.”

Mundane Investigators: “This could prove
troublesome.”

Maybe you shouldn't've excused the children from their follow-up visits after all.

Maybe I misunderstood just how much money there was and how much a skyboat would cost. But... if they're getting passage for four people, using money that would have presented moderate difficulty to pay one person's way to Ketheria, just how far could they have gone, and how comfortably? Granted, they're not burdened with the need to pay anyone else's wages, but... it's just been said they left a good deal of money behind, and they probably paid that Khtsoyis mage a good deal more. If so much of it is single-lozens, I wouldn't think they could afford to spend amber like water and still have enough to get a skyboat any great distance - a week's journey by skyboat is anecdotally mentioned as costing a thousand lozens, and that may well be for one person!

Though... sky boat. You're a member of the sky-pilot's guild. If you make a case to the guild that these people have stolen from you, and stolen money that was to pay people on your sky-boat their wages at that, could that loosen a few tongues re: where they went? Without invoking the word "pirate", since they didn't do so by force and did not, in fact, terrorize a sky-boat in flight?

I'm just hoping that Rehit turns out to be as good an investigator as he is a duelist, because mundane means of tracking them are going to be the most likely to work. Fortunately, Feralan is apparently distinctive even with the Illusidor spells on, so maybe they'll be able to follow them.

Zascalle was Sythyry's accountant. I expect that whatever reckoning zie had regarding how much was left in the Strayway's strongbox was given to zir by Zascalle.

Also, Sythyry has been talking about being nearly broke and how zie had to ask zir bank for more funds for two or three weeks now. One can well imagine that the execution of this task was delegated to Zascalle, and that Zascalle would be the one who told zir how long it would take the bank to produce said funds.

Well, I had brought what I thought would be plenty for two years, and it was gone after a few months. Admittedly, surprisingly expensive months ... but Zascalle may have, oh, half the money I brought. Plus whatever she was able to extract from the Bank of Teleporting Hexagons. She did have a great deal of freedom with all my accounts over the last several years.

In fact, on the 22nd of Thory: Fortunately, Zascalle says that
the cross-branch banking system is not utterly incapable of sending us some
money from my account in Ketheria in a matter of a few weeks, so I wrote some
letters authorizing her to do whatever was necessary and sent her off to
Eigrach.

I probably should have been more specific in that letter...

Absolutely not. That one lived in Treverre 125 years earlier.

It's a very common Cani name, like "Mary".

I've noted your language is growing a little more... mature, to put it one way. Is this to go with the fact that systhyry's vacation seems a lot darker than systhyry's journal?

From: [identity profile] sythyry.livejournal.com
[That, and some people talk that way. Though, wasn't Ysgwyd pretty coarse, in Sythyry's Journal? And Nestrune once used the same word, I remember quite clearly.]

From: [identity profile] kobolds.livejournal.com
Ysgwyd was indeed coarse, though I must say my memory is not accurate enough to recall Nestrune's swearing. It's just lately it's been striking me, I don't know why. I'm pretty prone to profanity myself so it's not as if it bothers me. All in all I'd have to say I like the more realistic use of language?

Good...

(Nestrune, on [5 Lage 4261], tells Sythyry that Ilottat's title ought to be worth "eleven fine fucks a year on average".)

But yes, Sythyry's Vacation is a lot darker than Sythyry's Journal.

I thought that was Sythyry's prediction of Nestrune's assessment, rather than an actual quote. Nestrune did take a lot of (largely deserved) flak from the lizard back then, after all.

Perhaps I misread. It happens!

In any case, this argument has gotten tiresome. He [Ilottat] has a
perfectly good same-species wife ... well, a perfectly
dreadful one, but he could get a perfectly good one as well
if he half tried. Even the sixth son of a count of an
neigboring country has a title that ought to be worth eleven
fine fucks a year on average, according to Crown Prince and
Expert Purveyor of Titles into Copulations Nestrune Kreslink.

So I thought Nestrune said so pretty directly. Probably flippantly, knowing Nestrune.

Oh. I had indeed forgotten about that part.

I start to wonder if stealing the money from the lockbox was an act of spite, if she had THAT much money available... granted, she might not have been able to increase the size of that transfer after the fact.

OOC, in case it doesn't come out later: she grabbed the lockbox cash for ready funds. Transfers are not that fast on the World Tree.

I just realised, Re: The money situation, aren't large parts of Strayway's outside made of silver?

I'm sure the smith's guild back in Ketheria won't mind you selling some down here.

Speaking of which, better check that you're not being fleeced by your shipwrights.

Just as OOC, with what's now come to light: She could have afforded to wait, pretending all was well, until the transfers went through. Stealing the lockbox funds was a risky move if she did it before everything else was squared away, and doesn't jive well with the preparations she's made otherwise. If someone had chanced to need money in the interim, she could have been found out before she had access to her Huge Pile of Money(tm).

If she hadn't stolen the lockbox, she might have got away clean until such time as people had said "enough is enough" and gone looking for her, or a communication with the bank had resulted in Problems.

I think she grabbed what she could and bolted as soon as Ochirion was anything like healthy enough to travel. As if she didn't want to have her children around Vae for one day longer than necessary, perhaps... a point of view which I have to have some sympathy for. When this is settled, I will give everyone a chance to go back home, away from the nendrai.

Okie! After this plot arc is over, poor Azliet -- who is Missing Cani Emotions (-4), which explains why she's so willing to spill everything on her family -- is going to try to join the wrongfolk. Hijinx and/or doom ensues.
