Mirrored from Sythyry.

In Zascalle’s quarters with Thiane and their children were any number of old clothes, strands of fur, cast-off toys, and assorted whatnots. Well, “any number” being rather less than I expected: they had taken a large part of their possessions with them. Notably left behind was Zascalle’s dearly-beloved if rather small collection of glass beads, spread prominently out on a table, as if to say, “I am a Rassimel’s dearly-beloved collection, definitively not with the Rassimel; therefore the Rassimel is not far distant and shall return soon, so be not suspicious, visitor!”

Well, Zascalle must be serious about her plan (whatever it is) if she’s sacrificing her dearly-beloved collection to carry it out.

I took a selection of suitable oddments for arcane connections, collected in suitable ways, and brought them to my laboratory.

They were no longer arcane connections to Zascalle, Thiane, Ochirion, or Feralan.

Me: “Well, that’s a bit disturbing. Not only are Zascalle and family nowhere to be found; they have taken the effort and spent what is surely a substantial sum of money to ensure that the straightforward means of magically communicating and locating them will not work. And a substantial sum of money it is — for, as I observe the shards of the spell that did it with the Eye of Mirizan and Melizan, it is a spell cast with substantial force by a Khtsoyis mage casting There Is None Who Knows Thee four times, and that, if I am any judge, will not come cheap. It is almost as if Zascalle had a great deal of money, and were willing to spend a fraction of it to ensure that she kept the rest.” I always talk to myself like that … or at least, I record it in my journal as if I were.

Me: “I do believe I know a trick worth two of that.”

Me: “And what might that trick be, O Sythyry, wise in the ways of magic?” This is more properly Phaniet’s line, but she was doing actually useful things elsewhere rather than her usual jobs in the lab. (Actually she’s more likely to tease me than flatter me, but when I am alone, I can pretend.)

Me: “As you well know, Sythyry, an arcane connection snipped by There Is None Who Knows Thee may be unsnipped by a suitable application of Healoc Magiador, especially with an admixture of Tempador, and — by some coincidence! — I am quite good at all three of those arts, being a guild healer, and, well, not to put too fine a point on it, a deep-mage.”

Me: “But of course, Sythyry! Unfortunately, magicobabble technobabble theorybabble spellababble, so the lesser connections available from Zascalle’s quarters are likely to yield inferior results!”

Me: “Ah, you have an excellent point, my good Sythyry. Fortunately, Ochirion was kept in this very room for treatment, and I have splinters of his bones, still covered with his dried blood, the residue from his second surgery.”

Me: “Great staring gods, Sythyry! Why did you keep such a thing?”

Me: “Because, Sythyry, the young Rassy was kidnapped not so long ago, by a monster who is still at large in this very ship, and having a solid connection to him might save time and trouble should the monster do so again.”

Me: “Extremely foresighted, Sythyry!”

Me: “Perhaps. In the last case, it would not have helped much … this time, we shall see.”

Me: “Then by all means let us commence!”

And, in a matter of moments, I had a very solidified arcane connection to Ochirion, and a spell that would keep me aware of where he was for the next month … if he were within about a hundred and twenty miles.

He was not within a hundred and twenty miles.

Me: “This is going to be troublesome.”

Only 120 miles? I guess you're not as good at hammercasting as at your various Nouns and Verbs. :/ IIRC, you wouldn't need a whole lot of hammercasting to be able to put as much cley as you wanted into the straightforward version of "Find Object" (Ke Lo cplx 10). As much cley as *you* want could be quite a lot!

... er, assuming you have Find Object grafted, which I guess you might well not. Oops.

Anyway, maybe Phaniet and the others will be able to tell which direction they went via mundane means?

As a note, it appears that your mirror is quite enchanted, as it is reflecting things twice upon the same page, with subtle differences in the headings.

I dislike hammer casting; most enchanters do. I generally have better things to do with a cley than add a little power to a spell with it. Especially on a day where I expect to be charging into battle.

That would explain why you're not good at it, indeed.

It does suggest there *might* be a better caster in Eigrach to look for Ochiron than you, though. Perhaps not a great deal better, since few would have anywhere near your cley base to pump into a spell, much less your base power.

I recall Vae was going to search the whole Tree for something-or-other a century ago, using a quite hideous Locador spell that you talked her out of trying. And she did use something less hideous, but I can't recall what. Or even what she was looking for. Another nendrai? Maybe that was how she found Oix?

A thought occurs: previous discussion mentions that you cannot let this pass lightly lest people get the impression you are easy to steal from. On the other hand, your desire to help Feleran limits your ability to pursue much in the line of actual punishment.

Perhaps a compromise is to let them to escape (not obvsiously, I mean make it look like you're trying to catch them), but to punish those who helped them do so sufficiently to get the desired reputation as a bastard?

I mean, how man khythosis mages can there be nearby? It's an uncommonly scholarly pursuit for a shoggy.

Well, that particular spell is of some value to a certain sort of person ... a sort which Khtsoyis tend to be, in fact. And it's a Destroc spell, which they are innately good at.

I don't much want Zascalle to escape. Especially since I do feel responsible for trying to cure Feralan.

And I suspect the Khtsoyis mage nearby is a citizen of Eigrach, and I am not, limiting my options for punishing him severely.

Also, I doubt it's a crime to cast the spell the Khtsoyis used. All Zascalle would have to say is: "A nendrai has access to arcane connections on myself and my family, and I'd like to break them so she can't hurt us." And pretty much anyPrime is going to agree that's a good, reasonable, and legal purpose for said spell. Bonus: it's even true.

(Although I'm not sure nendrai actually use arcane connections. Still, if she doesn't, that just means Zascalle says "a powerful monster" instead.)

Sure, the shoggy may well have guessed she was up to something sleazy, but the shoggy probably didn't investigate what (since she wouldn't want to know). It's usually not a crime to do something legal just because it *could* potentially be helping a criminal.

You think we'll find a black, spiky wall of thorns encasing a shredded airship, with Ferelan's family and the crew gruesomely impaled but still somehow alive, being danced around like puppets?

I perceive that Zascalle is going to be in very deep water when Sythyry catches up to the departed party, and that said water is likely to be of a temperature suitable for the wizard's bath.

I can totally see why Zascalle would do this, and don't even really blame her for it. But I can also see it was never going to work in the long run. She'd've been much better off doing what Mellilot did, right down to the cussing out.

Probably wise. Although her request lead to this mess being discovered before the culprits got FARTHER away, it's... probably not the best time to be pushing about it.

(Besides, the money that would have been used to pay her way is not currently available. As I understand it, you aren't likely to find a buyer/lender for any particular magic item on the spot even if you did want to let T&Z get farther away while you dealt with it.)

I dunno, if someone came up can said "Hey, can you help me do something that will likely get a Nendrai extremely pissed at you", I'm gussing most primes would not want to be involved at all.

I think once you get them inside a city wall and if they don't have any reason to think the nendrai will be able to tell it was them who helped, primes are probably willing to do so. Primes aren't quite as cowardly as you'd think in the presence of the demi-god-like monsters of World Tree.
