Field Trip [13 Hispis 4262]

Last class (three days ago), Prof. Oolumb told us that there would be a field trip in Intro to Marine Biology. "It is optional, of course. We'll be seeing the things from the textbook's chapters three through eight -- if the wildlife cooperates; it doesn't always. In principle you can do just as well in the course without the trip."

"How much swimming is there on the trip?" asked one of the Rassimel.

"Not very much. Three or four miles," said Prof. Oolumb. The Rassimel and the Herethroy said they'd demur.

"Outside the city wall?" asked one of the Orren.

"Yes, of course," said Oolumb. Two of the more urban Orren demurred too. Cowards, both of them! There's nothing worse than a nendrai out there.

"Anybody else not coming?" asked Oolumb, looking at me. "It will mainly be underwater."

"That's fine with me!" I said. "I can swim."

"Really? It will be several miles."

"That should be fine!" I said.

"Um ... right," said Oolumb. Most of the other students looked at me curiously. I grinned and beamed at the cutest and traffest-looking of them.

So today's the field trip.

And thus your gambit seems to be going to bear fruit unless, of course, Doom happens.

At least I get to see some fish!

Wait... where's the field?

Spoken like a jaded adventurer!

If by fish you mean "most likely naked Orren", then yes. I think an entirely new euphemism has thus been created if it is not already in common usage.

Heh. Well, naked Orren are not that hard to find, in the public ponds almost any month. I actually meant fish!

Let us hope that the wildlife cooperates!

For us, "marine biology" means "things that live in the ocean." I don't think you have oceans. Think of a lake that's miles deep and thousands wide, with the water as salty as blood. If your blood is even salty. (Do Herethroy have ichor instead of blood?). That's a lot of room for some really big, interesting, and deadly creatures. We harvest millions of pounds of fish/etc from the oceans.

You really should take a trip offtree sometime. We've got some nice beaches that you and your ottern friends would enjoy.

My blood is salty, though I prefer not to have it tasted...

I daresay I'll be taking offtree trips soon enough. Probably the first time that Vae is disappointed in love, or something.

So are you going to be an Orren for the trip? I guess that might defeat the purpose.

Well, everyone in the class will know who I am anyways. And traff Orren do like being able to swim with their sweeties... and to be able to be seen with them in public, for that matter. Showing that I can be an Orren isn't a bad thing.

And I'm not just looking for dates here. I might, oh, learn about aquatic biology. That would be awfully useful on dates, wouldn't it?

Um ... I'm not really consistent am I?

I've always wondered... I can understand your world having lakes... but do you have rivers? Wouldn't travel along a river be like highly dangerous as you started to get to the.. ummm... sides of the branch?

Their rivers are as likely to flow uphill as down. Must be nice. :)

We really can't afford to worry about the things that could go wrong in a situation like this because there's so much opportunity for things that can go right and it's a little harsh anyhow to assume that misfortune is simply waiting for a chance to turn up because if that were the case we'd never get anything done and especially not the most interesting stuff that would happen outside and I really don't understand why anyone would be so hesitant to venture beyond a city wall because it's entirely worth the experience and I live outside city walls though not too far out because I still enjoy making regular trips within to get materials for my art and I've been working on something lately that really doesn't involve anybody swimming except perhaps in fire though that makes it sound more disturbing than it actually is and anyhow you just have to be positive about things!

Good luck on the trip! Be sure to pick clothes that dry quickly.

This is Sythyry, remember. Doom always happens.

They could have an ocean...

... with appropriate use of Mutoc Locador and Mutoc Aquador. It would just have an *access point* small enough to fit on a World Tree branch.

Chorus: "Let's not mention this to the nendrai."

I don't know, that seems like a relatively harmless project. Lots of people make pocket universes for various purposes.
