Well, Sythyry's Journal is pretty clearly "Adult Concepts" all over.  I don't think it's explicit, but people might disagree.

So ... how many people are reading this and getting these nasty cut tags about above-14 content?

(This line is just an experiment)

Edit: It turns out that, if you're logged in and set your age, you can go to the bottom of your settings page  and set your viewing preference so you don't see those awful cut tags.

More Edit: On the advice of an honored Young Adult librarian, I have turned off "Adult Concepts".

Me.

But I don't think the content is unsuitable for minors; it deals with adult concepts, but in a way that I would consider suitable for YA.

And I was a YA librarian.

http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/
and set your viewing preference so you don't see those awful cut tags. I should write that in the main entry too.

And thanks for the YA content flag -- I can't tell that from where I sit. So you think my marking it as "Adult Concepts" is right?

Thanks!

Or not. 1837 is an "invalid year". 1892 isn't, though. Go figure.

For YA, sex and violence are not verboten. It just has to be handled appropriately.

I thought about it when I was choosing fantasy and science fiction for the collection.

I don't think the 'Adult Concepts' flag is really necessary.

That is basically designed for humans -- not zi-ri, nendrai, orren, cani, and so on.

And what adult concepts you have are more implicit than explicit.

I would not worry if I saw a ten year old reading your journal.

I agree with the YA standard. (I work in a private high school: kids 13ish and up.)

The sex is ... ok, I'm not sure if a 10 year old would get much of it, because it's mostly not explicitly stated that it happens, let alone what went on in detail. But that's ok. There's less explictness than in some award winners. (I'm thinking of "The Giver" and "How I Live Now", among others.)

If your content is too adult, all minors being raised in a household with a television, encyclopaedia or bible should be forced to wear a blindfold and earplugs in the home until they've reached 18, or until their minds have utterly and predictably atrophied.

Hmm, my untouched settings are
'this journal contains no adult content'
'do not collapse adult-oriented material written by others'
and
'use moderate filtering on searches' (LJ has search? news to me. oh, right, the useless 'search by username' kinds of stuff.)

My LJ has a birth-year attached to it, so they may be setting defaults based on that and assuming no year given means 'kid'.

I'm with SLRose. Sythyry's journal is not explicit. My journal has more "adult content" than Sythyry's journal does. But I'm not flagging mine, either, because I think it's stupid to have an extra gigantic cut tag that makes people go to a superfluous extra page for EVERY SINGLE entry when 99% of what I write is about politics or writing or something equally non-salacious.

And yeah, I've already changed my flag settings to auto-approve it. But it's still annoying to have that be the default if I'm not logged in. Bleah.

Oh, and actually, the flag thing only works if you give LJ your birthday in whatever specially-approved birthday-registration spot they've got set out for it.

I don't particular want to give LJ my birthday, as it happens.

I will deal with their byzantine help system in December and see if I can find a way to have this not be an unbelievable amount of nuisance. (Increased several fold for me because for some equally unknown reason, every web page load from my home computer takes an average of two or three refreshes to go through, for the last few weeks. Doesn't affect games, just web pages. But having to dig through extra screens and multiple help menus is TOTALLY NOT FUN right now.)

That's exactly it; I didn't have a year in my birthdate. Now I do, and I'm getting what you mention there. Ennh.

So, suppose my journal has "adult concepts"? Heh.

You can put in a fake birthday in the far distant past?

What? Has LJ become the new Mickey Mouse Club?

So ... how many people are reading this and getting these nasty cut tags about above-14 content?

I browse with cookies off so I will get them regardless of which trilobite I kept as a pet. I rather you didn't opt in for "Adult Concepts". Lj-cuts are a turn off. Ten-year olds can just 'ewwwww' at any implied kissing and groping and go back to reading Grimm and Enid Blyton, just like I did. I suffered no ill effects. *twitch twitch* Really, how many naive, sheltered 10 year-olds are hanging out on LiveJournal? All their friends are on DeviantArt, Myspace and Facebook. For a little kid, LiveJournal is boooooring! Pffft. Institutionalized censorship is easing towards mass hysteria. Fight the power!

I don't mind adult content -- if it's not to my taste, I can go elsewhere -- but I'm mightily offended by censorship. The new flagging policy is upsetting people and having a chilling effect on the blogosphere. I've already complained to LJ myself and I encourage others to do likewise; if they get enough complaints, maybe they'll remove the flag feature. Meanwhile, shutting it off should minimize the damage.

Are you okay?

Haven't seen anything new in two weeks or so. Is everything alright? Is there some emergency going on? Or some huge project that might be of interest or concern?

(Just checking. I remember one of the times a friend of mine stopped logging in and contributing stuff somewhere, a mutual friend finally informed me TWO YEARS LATER that she had in fact DIED in a fairly dramatic fashion, and he just hadn't felt like TELLING me. That was the last time I talked to THAT person too..)
