The loft doesn't just give you more space--as you note, space you already have a-plenty--it gives you more places to perch, and maybe more division of the space if you have guests at some point. (Even if all anyone intends is sleep, they might like a bit of physical separation between their beds and yours, such that one party can read in bed without the light disturbing the other.)
