Ghirbis's Question: When are you leaving for the Terrible Wilds of Draughador to slay the beautiful Princess Scrambolina and rescue the Terrible Dragon of Dundergrax from the clutches of the fabled Green Ruby of Argon.

The Answer: I am pretty sure that I have already left.

Anoof's Question: Which Cani did you meet there?

Me:"Tennis, and ... a black-furred gentleman with a longsword ... and ... um ... a brown-furred one in a pointy hat ... and ..."

Anoof:"Names? Scents?"

Me:"I'm sure they had some!"

Anoof:"I daresay that they did. How can you go to a social club and not pay attention to social things?"

Me:"I was mostly ogling my girlfriend?"

Anoof:"Alas, Zi Ri!"

Vae:"And is anyone planning to kill me?"

Me:"No"

Vae:"And how do you know? Not a glance at the book you got!"

Me:"Well, I guess I don't know."

Vae:"If they are, will you tell me?"

Me:"I will. I think."

Vae:"I would be glad if you did."

Me:"I wouldn't be glad of any such situation. "

Rhedwy:"Do you get laid?"

Me:"This is a topic that does not need discussion."

Rhedwy:"At L'Epee Epicee there is a very convenient large closet on the top floor. Use it when you collect an Orren there!"

Me:"Did you?"

Rhedwy:"I collect a Herethroy there! Four times!"

Me:"Perhaps a strong caustic soap will scrub such knowledge from my mind. Perhaps."

Rhedwy:"If you truly wish privacy, use this strong caustic soap to scrub Orren-scent from your feathers!"

Me:"Oh, dear."

ahem, one of the heroicly bad novellas in our universe is called "the Eye of Argon", which features a "green ruby"... has Ghirbis figured out some dimension-hopping magic?

I can smell as well as any Zi Ri, or any Rassimel or Orren for that matter. I can't smell as well as a Cani or a Sleeth of course.

Not quickly! Even in a Cani body, I don't know what I'm smelling the way a Cani raised Cani would. I could probably learn how to smell as well as a Cani does in a Cani body if I spent a decade or two studying smells.

Sometime, that may seem like a good idea.

Isn't there a spell or two that gives you the ability to scent as well as a cani and also helps you in differentiating smells and interpreting them like a cani would?

I suspect that a spell to aid in differentiation and/or interpretation would affect the mind, a taboo category.

well there's a spell to give you sleeth eyes... there should be a spell to give you a cani's nose... and, theoretically, what would it take to get the discriminating nose that a lifetime cani or sleeth would have? Would one have to already have that ability to impart it onto another?

Getting the nose is easy -- cloak of another god will do it as a side effect of being cani or sleeth. Zie's talking about being able to tell that 'this distinctive scent I can pick up means that this zi ri made out with an orren two hours ago'.

You could probably do it with some sort of Kennoc Airador spell, if you wanted to avoid mind magic. Then you wouldn't need to be able to smell it either.

oh! by the way, I found an icon that seems to be associated with your world, Sythyry. I think its a neat little picture. most people who would see it wouldnt have a clue what it is though, which is part of the charm. what do you think, can you see it in your journal? :)

It takes a long while to learn to use any unfamiliar senses. Learning how to see takes about four years. Some never learn it properly. (Really!) Because Cloak of Another God only puts you in a different body, it just transmits the scents -- it doesn't help you interpret them.

It would be like asking a teatotaler to distinguish among varieties of wine, or someone ignorant of world music to distinguish between a Samba and a Salsa. The person might recognize that there are differences, but she wouldn't be able either to explain them, or to put something unfamiliar into the right category.

It's also *supposed* to make simple things feel natural, but I guess whoever invented it wasn't a cani or sleeth.
