Yylhauntra

Yylhauntra wrote back, saying, in many more words, This is a highly regrettable circumstance, and in particular I regret anything I had to do with causing it. As time and situation allow, I will do my best to extricate you from it. My whole family seems to agree on this point, which I am quite glad of.

The Duke

Which lead to the following explanation.

Ilottat:"I think gwn, I know, why the duke of Vheshrame is so determined to have you and nobody else as the ambassador to Vae."

Me:"Because he's annoyed with Hezimikkinen and finding other ways to get revenge on zir?"

Ilottat:"Nullo modo! Something more practical, as your hinting about that seven-winged incendio suggests."

Me:"Because he doesn't have to pay me?"

Ilottat:"Because, angobeithio, if anything happens to you, he will instantly have seven and a half armies of angry Zi Ri bent on revenge. Glikkonen zirself counting as six of those, and Verehinga another one."

Me:"..."

Ilottat:"For free, I should think."

I didn't know what to say about that, and I still don't. It sounds awfully plausible, and plausibly awful.

Macropodia Elegans

I finally got the time and energy to visit Thery, Yarwain, Iska, and Macropodia Elegans. Yes, Iska is more or less living with them now. I don't know if she's Yarwain's lover, Thery's lover, both their lover, just a friend, or just a serious disappointment to whoever is paying her scholarship and expecting her to study maths.

Macropodia may be Elegans, or may not be, but Thery is not looking Elegans. She is looking ragged and mostly deflated except around the belly, careworn and ill. "Chrentothany is not pleased with my progress, I'm afraid. Though he is glad to have that new ritual spell Levande bought him. He tried it out on Baron Tigerslaan's new son. If it works on Macropodia Elegans, I will consider myself well and truly bribed in anything that Levande wants, except for my husband and my child. A pity that doesn't leave much left of me for the next few years."

They're all trying to be cheerful. I must admire them for it. Though if things get any worse for them, I may coerce Vae into doing ... well, I don't exactly know what. What's the point to being Ambassador to A Nendrai if I can't get occasional favors like that?

Well, assuming anyone thinks it's a favor.

Classes

No huge surprises here. A fairly bad term, all in all, but at least not in ways that will lose my stipend, or will have much to do with the true purpose of a Vheshrame Academy education. Indeed, I could fail all my classes and still get the most important part of a Vheshrame Academy education, at this point.

Formal Enchantment Superficially Followed. My ~mother~ ... whom I should be referring to as Eitharheinen more often ... is expecting this, and will not be too upset.
Applied Enchantment Thoroughly Labored. Seems appropriate. I did a great deal of work (mostly unsuccessful), and only tossed aside one week for boyfriend duties.
Very Dangerous Knobbles Nobly Excused. Which is technically pretty accurate. I was excused for, well, going off to war at the last minute.
Biology of Elementals Well-Reasoned. Not that it's true, that's just a plea bargain.
Leap into this Pool of Boiling Acid Excessively Excelled, as also decided.

Next Term

Applied Enchantment, and Ethology of Nendrai. I suppose I might take something else too. It hardly matters.

If anything happens to you, he will instantly have seven and a half armies of angry Zi Ri bent on revenge.

May I suggest you find some suitably diplomatic way of making sure Vae knows this fact?

I don't know how desperate Thery and Yarwain are yet, but I expect it wouldn't hurt to ask them. If they think it's worth it ... there are special risks to involving a nendrai, too. As you know far better than any of us. :( Good luck, Sythyry.

...

And I want to say this, too: thank you. Thank you for going through all of this on behalf of Vheshrame. I know you don't want to, and frankly, I sure don't want you to go through it, either. But your work is ensuring the safety of the city. You're doing a Good Thing, here, a very good thing, and I just want to say that I appreciate it. So ... Thank you.

Good point about the baby. Of course, Thery's barely leaving the apartment, much less the city, so it won't happen without considerable arranging.

And ... thanks for thanks. I haven't gotten very many of them yet.

As I have said before, I would think a law class dealing with unusual magic might be both interesting and, now, useful. Especially if that class touches on monster magic as directed by a Prime. You could take it as a indirect review of law in regards to interacting with monsters, siting various disasters described in the course as examples of what NOT to do, and at the same time get an idea of what you can do legally. And, at the very least, it's bound to feature Primes in worse scrapes than you!

I know. But you deserve them. Not many people know what your part in this is; maybe they'd be more appreciative if they did. *hug* Or maybe not; people are stupid that way.

But I know, and I'm grateful. *hug*

Right. I might think that that might be seen as doorwaying, and in any case - I seem to recall that such magics weren't used because of the danger of breaking the baby. I hardly expect Vae to understand how exactly to work the spells to avoid such a disaster.
Perhaps a class on parenting, since you seem to be in the position of giving Vae a good upbringing..

I'm raising Vae?

I think I'd rather have a child of my own species. Like, starting now. I'm sure it'll be much less painful.

Yeah ... we'd have to give Vae a ... I don't know what. Lots of information on Rassimel anatomy. I think it's a bad idea, really.

"Oh, it's coming out that'll be dangerous for the baby?" [flick]

"My god!" "Aiieee!" "What have you done?"

"What, is it back in her you want the baby put now?"

That would be very Vae! Also very regrettable.

Primarily because it was an invitation for Gnarn to eyeball the kid closely. Which is not so much a worry about "breaking" so much as Mega Mega Mega (or whatever we're calling him/her) coming out of the womb with some non-factory-standard extras...
